During the Indian war of 1971, Major Hoshiar Singh was ordered to capture the Pakistani locality of Jarpal.

Major Hoshiar Singh though seriously wounded by enemy shelling went from trench to trench moving about in the open with utter disregard to his personal safety immediately rushed to the machine-gun pit and manned the gun which inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy.

Major Hoshiar Singh displayed the most conspicuous gallantry and was awarded the Param Vir Chakara for his indomitable fighting spirit and leadership.
